Heat stroke Vs Heat Exhaustion

With tremendous heat during summer of India, we as medical student should know the signs that differentiate between a heat stroke and heat exhaustion… This will help us , help the patient :-

But yes, sometimes it gets difficult for some people to know the exact difference between the both terms that is heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

For that, in heat exhaustion - salt and water imbalance is there. Generally the body temperature is more than 40.5°c. There will be sweating and moist skin. Mostly treatment is given as salt and water replacement.

And in heat stroke, it occur because of the failure of body in heat regulation. In it, body temperature is generally below 40.5°c. There will be dry hot skin and no sweating. Indeed it’s an emergency. The immediate action which could be taken is make the person move to the cooler place, by rapid cooling.

Yess, it’s very important to make a difference between these two, a stroke can be much more dangerous and needs a immediate first aid before the medical help arrives. Heat strokes are common in summer season when the temperature reaches a high point.
