Health insurance

India is planning to curb overcharging by healthcare providers, a move that could involve bringing the health insurance claims portal under the Ministry of Finance and the insurance regulator.
This initiative aims to regulate healthcare costs more effectively.
A study highlighted that hospitals often inflate treatment expenses, particularly for patients with higher insurance coverage, which in turn leads to an increase in health insurance premiums.

To address this, the National Health Claims Exchange, a platform for communication among insurers, providers, and patients, might be placed under stricter supervision. This is expected to enhance the bargaining power of insurance companies in negotiating treatment rates.
The background to this move includes a decrease in the annual growth rate of health insurance premium income and a decline in policy renewals, both attributed to the escalating costs of healthcare.
