Grey's Anatomy and Med school

Growing up on Grey’s Anatomy does something strange to your brain. Something very strange that I cannot quite name.

On one side, you’re a regular student Googling “how many hours should I study for NEET/MCAT?” On the other, you genuinely believe your future med school life will be 30% surgery, 30% emotional monologues in corridors, and 40% staring intensely at CT scans with background music.

You start dropping words like “craniotomy” and “cardiothoracic” way before you can spell “physiology” correctly. You look at your friends and mentally assign specialties: “She’s totally a future pediatrics person, he has pure ortho energy.” Somewhere between season 3 heartbreaks and season 10 plot twists, the idea of being a doctor stops being just a childhood dream and starts feeling…possible.

Then you open an actual anatomy textbook. No dramatic lighting, no interns sprinting, just Latin names quietly mocking you. That’s when you realise: real medicine might not look like Grey’s, but the show did give you one thing, stubborn, slightly delusional hope that you belong in that world someday.

I would really recommend to watch the best medical drama i have seen is ''THE PITT", a emergency department set up what a creation it is.

I truly believe the real life of a doctor is far different from what is portrayed in such shows. Nevertheless, these programs have inspired curiosity and passion in many children, motivating some of them to dream of becoming doctors one day.

Medical dramas do provide inspiration but are also delusional. Real life is quite different from reel life. To become an expert in your chosen medical field requires years of hard work & dedication.

I think most of us had our “I’m going to be Meredith Grey” phase before anatomy humbled us :joy:

No dramatic background music, no corridor monologues, just textbooks and sleepless nights. Still, shows like Grey’s made medicine feel possible!!

Most people go into medical school after watching Greys Anatomy without knowing what it means and how hard you have work. Medical school is not all rainbows and sunshine, you need to have patience and passion for medicine.

The real world setting is a 360° flip of the world shown on screen. But yeah, I believe it opens up your mind to the medical world and its helpful watching such shows, it builds up your fascination for the med field.

Real life is totally different from what is shown on screen. But to some extent it glorifies and creates attraction for this field.

No matter how much the show tries to portray the life of a doctor, in reality, it’s a lot different. It can, to an extent, show the struggles and hard work a doctor goes through that not everyone can see. But the actual “Behind the scenes” of a doctor’s day is only known by them.
