Is Gluten-Free Always Healthier?
Many people believe that going gluten-free automatically makes a diet healthier, but that’s not always true!
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. For people with celiac disease, gluten triggers immune reactions that damage the gut. Gluten can also cause sensitivity in some people.
Essential for some – For those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, avoiding gluten is necessary and improves health.
Not a magic health boost for everyone – For people without these conditions, cutting out gluten doesn’t automatically improve nutrition, weight or energy.
Why “gluten-free” isn’t always healthier:
-
Many gluten-free products are highly processed, with added sugar, fat or calories.
-
You may miss out on fiber, vitamins, and minerals found in whole grains like wheat, barley and rye.
-
It can be expensive and harder to maintain a balanced diet.
Gluten-free is essential for some, optional for most, but it isn’t a universal health hack. A balanced diet with whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein is usually healthier than simply avoiding gluten.
