Beyond Copy Paste Medicine: Using AI as a Supplement, Not a Substitute

During my medical school journey , I have notice one of the trend that many student realise on the AI tools like Chatgpt or Gemini not only for quick doubts but also for everyday day to day examination which distance the students from the core habits of reading the standard textbook.

Medicine is the field which requires the conceptual clarity and critical thinking and clinical judgement too. While AI can provide the quick explanation but it may be some time inaccurate also.

As said every coin has a two faces , AI also has a powerful positive side. Where tools like NotebookLm is insanely good when it comes to how technology advancement has done.

I myself has used it during my preparation where you just upload your standard textbooks and just start asking whatever doubts whatever questions you have in your mind it will give the answer not based on the internet but rather than on the same textbook text that you have uploaded. It’s kinda win win situation for a medical student as they can learn from the standard textbook using the technology.

So yes, the key is balance.

Artificial intelligence can act as a learning assistant but not the primary teacher.

Use AI wisely. Let it support your learning, not replace it.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

AI can assist learning, but medicine still requires thinking beyond tools. Use Artificial Intelligence as support, not a substitute. :brain::books:

Absolutely! AI should be used as a support rather than a complete substitute. AI can help simplify complex topics, but it shouldn’t be used as the primary source of study material.

AI should be used as a help in completing tasks not for doing the tasks.

It has both pros and cons like any new technology. Using it wisely would be supportive.

Well said! AI is a powerful tool, but true medical learning still comes from strong concepts and clinical thinking. Balance is the key.

AI can assist in understanding complex data and make learning much easier. But, it cannot be used for making clinical decisions.

AI can support doctors not replace them. Further not everything stated by AI is 100% correct. Information needs to be cross verified and logical skills need to be applied before treating any patient as no two patients are same, neither there response to the treatment plan will be same.

Well said. AI is to help you, not replace the thinking process. The ability to think and solve problems will be reduced if we depend on AI for all the answers.

AI can be used to assist us while carrying out tasks that requires specific requirements which human brain cannot alone perform. At times of urgency or to screen multiple tasks at once whose outcome is important. It is an excellent tool to learn about many things.

AI can enhance learning by providing quick explanations, personalized support, and easy access to information. However, human teachers remain essential for critical thinking, mentorship, and meaningful learning experiences.

I agree. AI can support learning, but it can’t replace books and the well-structured, carefully articulated knowledge they provide. Books help build deep understanding, critical thinking, and a strong foundation in a way AI alone cannot.

AI should be used as a support and definitely not as a replacement to standard textbooks. AI can help to gain more knowledge on a specific topic as it provides information from different sources, provided one has already read the textbooks as they have been written by the experts in their respective fields.

Yes, AI should only be used as a supplement. I know most people, especially students these days, rely on AI for everything, even the simplest tasks. I know AI makes our lives easier, but it is not good to use AI while doing assignments or schoolwork. AI can also make mistakes, so dont rely on it completely.

this is balanced perspective

AI is a powerful tool, but medicine demands depth, not shortcuts. When used alongside standard textbooks, it enhances learning—but overdependence can weaken core understanding. Balance is everything: let AI assist, not replace the discipline of studying and thinking critically.
