What are they and why are they so much into prevalence these days ?
Frankly, it is the obsession with Alkaline water which I don’t understand.
Alkaline foods are those believed to reduce acidity in the body—like fruits, veggies, nuts, and legumes. They’re trending because people think they prevent diseases, boost energy, and improve overall health. But as a med student, I see it more as a wellness fad—our body tightly regulates pH, so diet has minimal effect on blood pH. The real benefit likely comes from eating more whole, plant-based foods, not the “alkaline” label itself.
Alkaline foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, are believed to help maintain the body’s pH balance.
These foods are rich in nutrients and antioxidants, and may help reduce inflammation and promote overall health.
Examples include leafy greens, citrus fruits, and nuts. Incorporating alkaline foods into your diet can support a healthy lifestyle.
I believe this is not about trend, but something everyone should follow in their life.
Alkaline foods are plant based and include fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and herbal teas.
The trend is gaining popularity as these foods:
- boost immunity
- reduce inflammation
- detoxify the body
- prevent chronic disease like cancers and heart diseases
Alkaline ash is thought to protect you from illness, while acidic ash can make you vulnerable.
More alkaline food means improving health.
Food sources can however be divided:-
*Acidic: meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, grains, alcohol
*Neutral: natural fats, milk, starches, sugars
*Alkaline: fruits, nuts, legumes, vegetables
Alkaline foods are trending now. People say they help health, but science is still checking. Eating balanced is best.
I don’t get where the generation is going, chlorophyll water, alkaline water, pink salt, and now alkaline foods ? No offence to anyone, but all foods taken with good balance is much better.
Alkaline foods have a high pH level, while acidic foods have a lower pH. Some examples of alkaline foods are non-starchy veggies, fruits, nuts such as chestnuts or pumpkin seeds, and legumes like kidney beans or white beans. Acidic foods include meat, cheese, eggs, and grains. Milk and natural fats are considered neutral.
The alkaline diet focuses on reducing acid-forming foods such as meat and dairy while emphasizing alkaline foods like fruits and non-starchy vegetables. It may support health by increasing the body’s pH and dietary fiber, and potentially lowering disease risk. However, strict adherence can lead to deficiencies in protein, vitamins, iron, and calcium. Adding more plant-based foods can be beneficial, but it’s important to maintain a balance. Overall nutrition and long-term health are ensured by combining alkaline meals with other nutrient-rich choices.
These type of diet and trends builds unnecessary fear and stress over food. Having a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, good fats, proteins of either animal or plant source and carbs in a positive and peaceful environment is more important.
Alkaline foods have become popular mostly because people are looking for easy fixes to feel healthier. The idea sounds reassuring — eat more fruits and veggies to make the body less acidic. While the body already maintains its own pH balance, choosing these foods does make people feel lighter, more energetic, and less bloated. So it’s less about chemistry and more about eating patterns that genuinely make you feel better. Sometimes trends catch on because they simplify what good nutrition has been saying for decades.
Nuts, beans, vegetables,fruits and other plant based foods like tofu are considered Akaline foods. It’s assumed that these food items help us maintain healthy pH of body. An average human body is naturally capable of maintaining ph level. Human blood is slightly alkaline in order to perform vital functions while different body parts may have different pH levels like bile being more alkaline and stomach highly acidic which is completely normal and healthy. The fad alkaline diet publicized by influeners who generally do not follow evidence based practices is actually influencing people which is a raising concern.
Alkaline foods are foods that are believed to help keep the body’s ph level more alkaline . These foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. However, while plant-rich diet is healthy ,there is no scientific evidence that proves it helps in altering the systemic ph in individuals.
Nowadays social media and wellness communities have created a hype by shifting towards alkaline diet, believing it help maintain body ph ,promote weight loss, glowing skin and improve health. But people must understand the effects and avoid unnecessary restrictions in their diet. It is important to consult a nutritionist and create a well balanced diet plan rather than solely following internet guidelines .
According to National Cancer Institute’s Dictionary of Cancer Terms, “A dietary approach that aims to reduce acidity within the body. The diet focuses on eating foods considered alkaline (with a pH above 7) and avoiding foods considered acidic (with a pH below 7). Examples of alkaline foods include fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, and non-starchy vegetables. Examples of acidic foods include meat, cheese, eggs, grains, and processed foods. There is no proof that an alkaline diet can slow, cure, or keep diseases such as cancer from coming back.”
Diet in general should be balanced. Alkaline foods with a pH greater than 7 may seem like a great concept, but no relevant research has proven that such a trend is true. Balancing the diet for different macro- and micronutrients is more essential than such passing trends where health is compromised.
Not all information in social media is true.Public should follow after careful analysis and guidance by registered practitioners.Eventhough alkaline diet consist of fruits and vegetables,every individual is different and need a balanced diet for overall well being.Especially children should not be subjected to experiment in their diet.They need balanced diet that includes all the essential nutrients for their growing age.
Alkaline foods do not change the pH of blood, but they make the cells and the space between the cells more alkaline. This in turn provides protection against chronic diseases like diabetes. So, they are not just a trend but have proven benefits especially in older age groups and people having some chronic diseases. I have shared 2 articles that explain this.

We shouldn’t follow trending things without prior knowledge about it. We should focus on balanced diet. Also,alkaline food is hyped without proper evidence isn’t acceptable.
While alkaline food doesn’t significantly change blood pH, incorporating more fruits and vegetables can boost overall wellness. The real advantage lies in a nutrient rich, balanced diet rather than following the “alkaline” hype.
Alkaline foods may be somewhat helpful in detoxifying one’s body but when given to children or infants, it is dangerous and can be fatal. So, awareness comes to the play.
