Have you ever noticed, when your are anxious, tired or overwhelmed, you find yourself reaching out for that chocolate bar? You are not the only one. This is your body’s way of asking for some quick energy.
What really happens when you are stressed:
When you are under pressure or any anxiety, your body goes into survival mode. This is preparing you to fight or feel the situation ( fight or flight response). For that, your brain needs fuel fast, and the quickest source of energy is sugar.
That is why you suddenly find yourself wanting something sweet or high in carbohydrates, so the body can top up it’s energy levels.
Why sugar can feel so comforting:
Sugar while energising you, also gives your brain a hit of dopamine. The chemical that makes you feel happy and rewarded. Eating something sweet in that moment can be soothing.
With simple carbohydrates however, the blood sugar crashes quickly, and you are left feeling more tired. This in turn makes you reach out for more sweets.
How to break the cycle?
- Eating balanced meals: include protein and fibre in your meals to keep your energy levels stable.
- Do not skip meals: going long hours without food can make your body crave more sugar
- Get enough sleep: lack of sleep increases cortisol and makes your body feel stressed.
- Keep mindful swaps handy: fruits, peanut butter, yoghurt or a small piece of dark chocolate are all good options
Your sugar cravings when your tired are not a lack of willpower, but your body’s response to coping with stress. Cravings start to lose their power once you take care of your meal timings, and rest adequately.
