Why you should never ignore your bleeding gums?

Bleeding gums is an early sign of inflammation in gums.

It is a result of plaque and calculus deposited on the surface of teeth that act as a constant irritant to the gums causing inflammatory response. If not addressed, it can lead to inflammation spreading to the deeper tissues – the periodontal ligament (the ligament that attaches a tooth to the underlying bone) and the bone. When this happens, it is called periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a chronic condition. In the long run, it can cause – loosening of the teeth. In addition to these problems related to teeth, it can also affect your overall health. Studies have proven the relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular conditions, adverse pregnancy outcomes, metabolic syndromes etc.

Thus, bleeding gums should not be taken lightly. But the good news is that all this cascade is easily preventable. Early stage of bleeding gums (gingivitis) can be managed with professional scaling and / or root planning by the dentist and improved oral hygiene measures by yourself. Thus, bleeding gums is a window for prevention of other serious problems which should never be ignored.

Have you ever experienced bleeding from the gums? Did you ignore it?

Very informative. Dental health remains a frequently ignored aspect of overall wellness. A common mind set is to treat as symptom driven rather than preventive measure, waiting until the pain becomes unbearable.

Periodontal health is often being ignored, but it should not be. Periodontal infection can cause many diseases as microorganisms can enter the bloodstream and can cause serious cardiovascular conditions.

Dental health reflects systemic health. Periodontitis has been linked to a two-way relationship with diabetes. Simple bleeding gums can lead to various adverse effects that are not expected. Regular comprehensive dental care can help prevent this at an early stage.
