Signs It’s Time to Get Your Dental Cleaning

People only visit a dentist at the time of a serious dental issue like dental pain or swelling. They lack a clear understanding of why regular visits are important. Routine visits not only ensure that your mouth is free of dental decay, but they also help in the detection of plaque or tartar buildup or major issues such as oral cancer.

Dental Cleanings are one of the most important treatments to prevent decay and ensure optimal oral health. It is recommended to get a professional cleaning twice a year to protect your teeth and gums.

Consequences of not Getting a dental cleaning:

Plaque buildup is a progressive disease. Bacterial colonies start accumulating around the tooth which starts a chain reaction. It starts with a gum infection also called gingivitis, which is characterised by inflammation and bleeding from gums. As the plaque hardens and turns into tartar, the disease progresses rapidly and the gingivitis soon turns into a periodontal infection termed periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a catastrophic sequelae that houses more bacteria. These bacteria lead to the resorption of bone, which ultimately leads to loosening of teeth.

Gum infection ignored for a long time may result in the falling of teeth because of bone loss and gum recession. In patients with systemic diseases, these conditions progress at a much faster rate and need a more cautious approach.

Visible signs that suggest professional dental cleaning:

  1. Swollen Puffy Gums:

The gums become swollen and turn red with rounded edges rather than usual coral pink colour.

  2. Bleeding on Slight Provocation:

Frequent bleeding is seen from gums even on slight provocation. It might bleed profusely doing basic functions such as eating or brushing.

  3. Constant Bad Odour:

If the bad odour persists even after brushing twice a day and using mouth freshener is also not helping, it might be an indication that you have gingivitis. This condition is also called halitosis and is a result of bacterial accumulation.

  4. Sensitivity to Hot and Cold:

If you are having difficulty consuming hot and cold food, it is not always indicative of a decay or root canal treatment. Periodontal infection also portrays the same symptoms due to exposed tooth roots.

  5. Receding Gums:

In more advanced stages, the gums start to move away from the teeth, making them appear longer. The gum recession is because of the loss of the bone below. If recession continues to occur, the teeth eventually become loose and become mobile.

  6. Tooth Pain while Chewing and Bad Taste:

Periodontal disease also exhibits tenderness which is usually experienced while chewing. This symptom paired along with bad taste might suggest pus formation.

Everyone should include dental check up in their annual check up list. Oral health is important and timely intervention can be helpful in many situations.

Middle class families tend to avoid visiting doctors until they suffer some actual issue like pain or bleeding gums. Dental check up camps in schools or other places should be more frequent. It helps inculcate the importance of regular check up in young minds which actually might become habit in future and they even might encourage others as well.

Oral hygiene is an integral part of leading a healthy life. These periodontal issues have been linked to preterm birth during pregnancy. Proper maintenance of the teeth in later stages of life ensures proper mastication and proper intake of nutrients. Lack of hygiene and maintenance could impact social well-being and cause low self-esteem.

Dental cleanings are not cosmetic, but preventive, to prevent the formation of plaque from progressing into irreversible gum and bone diseases. Lack of concern regarding early gum symptoms enables gingivitis to develop into periodontitis and lead to loss of teeth and health-related complications. Seeing a dentist regularly is beneficial not only for maintaining a healthy smile but also for keeping your teeth healthy for a lifetime.

This post clearly explains the importance of the topic in today’s healthcare scenario.
