Have you ever remembered every lyric of a song from decades ago, yet forgotten why you just walked into another room? This article explains that the reason lies in how the brain organizes different types of memory.
Remembering song lyrics relies on long-term memory, strengthened by repetition, emotion, rhythm, and multiple brain networks working together. In contrast, remembering a quick task depends on working memory, which is short-term and easily disrupted by distractions or changes in context.
Psychologists also describe the “doorway effect,” where moving into a new space can interrupt the memory of what you intended to do.
This fascinating explanation shows that these everyday lapses are not necessarily memory failure, but simply how our brain prioritizes information.
when you hear a song long time ago you still tend to remember entire lyrics this happens because we listen to that song with our 100% focus and we tend to remeber because we payed full attention towards each and every word and we forget why we enter the another room because we didn’t payed our full attention towards the thought why to enter that room.
It is like, a nurse walks from the medication rook to a patient’s ward planning to check the dosage schedule, but upon entering the ward, the nurse momentarily forgets the purpose and has to retrace their thought process.
I liked how you connected everyday experiences, like remembering song lyrics but forgetting small tasks, with scientific explanations such as working memory and the doorway effect. It makes the topic easy and interesting to understand.
Interesting post. Also, I think it happens when we are doing something important and have a constant rush of thoughts in our minds due to which we lose our focus on the present which leads us to forget what we had actually intended to do.
This was interesting to read. Repetition is a very important tool while preparing for exams too. Instead of studying a topic for long hours, just repeating it multiple times helps us recall everything without even trying hard.
Yes. Doorway effect is the way by which brain is trying to process things. Attaching below is a post I had written few months back in substack. Feel free to go through it and comment how can I improve more, since thats my first trial to enter this field of medical writing https://substack.com/@drlakshmirwarrier/p-179895633
Forgetting small things is very relatable. We usually plan so much for the day that after completing one task often forget the next task. Simple daily example is if I am doing something and get a call then after receiving and talking I usually forget what actually I was planning to do next. It’s very silly but true fact.
I realise how everything is beautifully related to medicine. it happens with me I forget things suddenly, but I remember each and every minute thing of my loved ones, maybe it’s the emotional connection which makes my mind just to remember it.
