Why sleeping with lenses is risky?

Discovery of the contact lenses has been a breather, for people using eyeglasses. Although lenses have their own benefits, say for correcting the vision or for decorative purposes. If not handled properly can cause trouble.

What keeps our eyes naturally hydrated?

Our eyes get contaminated with bacteria very frequently, but when we blink there is a tear production which keeps eyes hydrated along with the flow of oxygen. It keeps eyes safe from infection.

Why it is recommended to remove lenses before sleeping?

  • When we wear contact lenses for any purpose, it blocks the entire surface over the eye making it difficult for the tear production thereby affecting hydration of the eyes and reduces the oxygen flow as well. So if you keep it on during sleep it blocks the oxygen flow in the eyes even more.
  • If accidentally or by behavioural choice you keep contact lenses on during sleep, next day you might feel little dryness in the eyes which might go away by blinking and with the help of certain eye drops.

Does keeping lenses on during sleep cause eye infection?

  • Yes it can increase your risk of developing eye infection by 6 to 8 times. It can cause Infections like bacterial keratitis, acanthamoeba keratitis, fungal keratitis.
  • In some severe cases it might even lead to corneal damage resulting in permanent vision loss.
