Have you ever felt emotional when a favorite character died, a series ended, or a movie character achieved their dream?
Even though fictional characters aren’t real, the emotions we feel for them often are.
Psychologists explain this through something called parasocial relationships—one-sided emotional connections that people form with fictional characters, celebrities, or online personalities. As we spend hours watching a character’s journey, struggles, and growth, our brain begins to treat them almost like someone we know personally.
Interestingly, brain imaging studies suggest that when we empathize with fictional characters, many of the same brain regions involved in real-life social interactions become active.
Characters often resonate with us because we see parts of ourselves in them—their fears, ambitions, insecurities, or dreams. Sometimes they become sources of comfort, inspiration, or even motivation during difficult phases of life.
This is why finishing a beloved book, movie, anime, or TV series can sometimes feel like saying goodbye to a friend.
While these connections are normal and often harmless, they also remind us how deeply humans are wired for storytelling and emotional connection.
Have you ever felt genuinely sad when a fictional character left a story or when a favorite series ended? Which character had the biggest impact on you?
