Why do students understand concepts better when explaining them to others?

As students, we all would have learnt different concepts in school and college.Sometimes, the concepts would have been clearer in the class and once we come home and try to recollect we might not have a clear picture of the same .But when we discuss with our friends or parents,we might understand it much better. Has it ever happened in your school/ college days ?

This is because when we teach others we tend to take care of the following:

1.Clear understanding of the concept.
2.Identify the difficult aspects and prepare to explain it.
3.Constant recall and practice.

There is a saying by 19th century French Physicist" To Teach is to learn twice.”So when we teach someone we learn the concept thoroughly such that the learner becomes confident .Our depth of understanding also improves with it.

I am sharing a personal experience from my childhood, when i used to scribble on the doors with chalk piece becoming a teacher and explain chemistry equations to imaginary students. The idea was to understand and remember the concepts.

How many of you have become teachers when you were still students?

As a daughter of a teacher i always helped my mother take tuitions in her absence even when i myself was in school. Teaching others will make us understand about the subject thoroughly and gives us new perspectives and ideas.

Imaginary students always ask “Why?” You find yourself anticipating those questions, which leads to a deeper layer of understanding beyond just memorization.

As students, we all learn countless concepts in school and college. Sometimes, everything feels crystal clear in class but once we’re home and try to recall it, the picture isn’t always as sharp. Interestingly, when we discuss the same topic with friends, siblings, or parents, the concept suddenly starts making much more sense

Yes its a mandatory play for most of indian children ,to imitate the teacher and shaping behaviour of imaginary students ,we understand the concept better when we hear it from our friends because, he already processed and made the concept easy and adapted to the concept in an story in a native language so our brain directly getting this in raw form,so we feel familiar with the concept as our friends use the language and perspectives of a student

I clearly remember explaining lessons (Chemistry) to my friends before exams, thinking I was helping them, but it actually helped me understand the subject much better. I realized that when I teach, I naturally revise, simplify, and remember concepts more effectively. It truly builds confidence and deeper clarity.

I can completely relate to this… Whenever I explain something to someone else I realize how much clearer it becomes for me too.

Teaching a concept to someone else makes you understand that topic more, because while you are teaching, you try to make it simpler and easy to understand. In the same way, if you are teaching yourself, that makes the concept more retainable. Also, there is power in repetition; if you repeat a concept multiple times, it stays with you for a longer period of time.
