Why do people self medicate with herbal drugs

Often patients use medications on their own. These medications are readily dispensed to them without any prescription. Eg: Dolo 650, Voveron. Self-medication is common in our country.

Just like allopathic medications, many people often buy herbal medications from a pharmacy without any doctor’s prescription. Over a period of time, these drugs can cause complications. Herbal medications also contain lead, arsenic, and mercury as components, which can affect the kidneys if consumed for longer periods.

I came across this article on how unlicensed herbal formulations without doctor prescription are affecting people and how Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin is increasing.

The side-effects of these medications are so worse that they damage the inner parts of glomerulus and result in irreversible damage and scarring. The patients should stop consuming any liquids, powder or bhasma without proper consultation.

What should we do to stop this unlicensed herbal formulations from being sold?
