Its a fact that 80% autoimmune diseases occur in women. But what is the reason behind it? Is it genetics or hormones or some other reason ?
Here is what the researchers think -
- Due to X chromosome : immune related genes are present more in X chromosome and having two X chromosomes, there are more chances of inactivation or mosaicism of genes.
- The remaining fetal cells in the mothers body even after years can contribute to autoimmune risks.
- Estrogen makes immunity stronger which is good for making antibodies against infection but sometimes it makes the body attacks its own cells by mistake
- Stress and lifestyle can also play a role overtime
