Why are men taller than women?

On an Average, adult males tend to about five inches taller than adult females due to a gene called SHOX, according to a study published in the peere reviewed journal PNAS.

Interesting! I think it has something to do with evolution and the genes modified accordingly.

It gets to do with growth hormone.
So basically growth hormone has good influence with estrogen and testosterone and because female has boost secretion of these hormones , they will cause release of growth hormone until puberty. However in case of make , testosterone level is constant even after puberty.

So, to summarise we have seen females grow taller until primary school/ until puberty and then in case of males they grow taller even after puberty hence gaining more height than females…

I hope it wasn’t confusing

Men are generally taller than women due to genetic and hormonal factors.

The Y chromosome and testosterone contribute to increased height in males. Males have a longer growth period during puberty, allowing for greater height gains.

These factors result in average height differences. Individual variations are significant, and genetics play a major role.

Hormonal differences also influence growth patterns.

I’d like to add that the environmental factors and genes together play the role. For me as a Indian let’s take 5’5 as the avarage height for a male. But that in Northern Countries 5’5 is the average height for that of female. Where as in some South Asian countries 4’11 might be average for female. So at first genes, secondly environment.

Yeah I’ve noticed this too and was always curious growing up. I read somewhere that while both boys and girls have growth spurts during puberty, boys usually have theirs later but it lasts longer—plus testosterone plays a big role in elongating bones. Also, SHOX gene expression is slightly different in males, which might explain the average height gap. It’s just a mix of biology and timing I guess!
