Based on current trends, I’d say the biggest challenge for biotech students today is likely:

-Too much theory, less practical

Biotechnology is a highly practical field, and students often struggle to gain sufficient hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills. This can make it difficult for them to transition smoothly into the workforce or apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

Without real-world interaction—internships, live projects, or hands-on lab work—students often graduate with theoretical knowledge that doesn’t match industry demands. Bridging this gap is essential to build confidence, skill, and employability.

  • As a biotechnology study in India you won’t get much wet lab experiences because of low quality labs in colleges .

  • Students have no knowledge of how to get into different biotech firms .

  • The students should be trained skillfully which unfortunately is not what most colleges are doing presently .

The biggest challenge is not getting a job in the same field through campus selection in many universities. There’s very limited tie-up of the universities with the research labs or specifically the industries. Most of the biotech students are compelled to take up the jobs unrelated to their fields because of this. Now when a student tries to find out the job on his/her own, there’s a lot of competition there. Only undergraduate and postgraduate degrees are not enough for most of the jobs with high credibility and a good pay and the growth in these positions are very slow. Most industries prefer a Ph.D. or a MBA/M.Pharma in Bioetchnology (to some extent) for various esteemed positions. Postgraduation is mostly mandatory to be done in the field of biotechnology to secure a good job in the field. Various other certfications and internships alongside may enhance the personal profile and can assist hugely for securing better jobs.

The biggest challenge for biotech students today is limited practical exposure and job opportunities.

Research funding are very less. Mostly big companies invest on those project where they get profit. Mostly companies are not interested in only research or some break through. They want profit that why there are very less funding.

I think biotech stusents apply themselves best through practice than theory. Our biggest challenge is gaining confidence in our own abilities, which is only found through lab based projects
