Can we do courses like diabetic nutrition counseling, psychiatric counseling, lifestyle/diet counseling, etc.?
Also, which online platforms are best and government-approved for such certifications so that we can practice professionally?
I’m a Pharm D student looking to expand my skill set and offer more value to patients, especially in chronic lifestyle conditions. If anyone here has completed any such course or knows reliable platforms (like IGNOU, NIMHANS, etc.), kindly guide me.
It would be a great help for pharmd people if someone cohld explain this.
This is great information for pharmacy students. With proper training and certification Pharm.D graduates can offer lifestyle, diet, and medication-related guidance within their scope.
Pharmacists in India can legally do patient counseling for medications, diabetes, smoking cessation, and basic health advice through short certified courses — but they can’t practice as psychologists without a proper psychology degree and license.
Do you have a genuine interest in people’s health? Do you also want to learn about different medicines? If yes, then you should consider pursuing your career as a pharmacist.
pharmacovigilance,ADR monitoring.
Most of the counseling certifications are of short duration and by doing these certifications, one can use this knowledge in their existing medical/healthcare/pharmacy-related jobs, but practicing counseling (to counsel people) isn’t permissible in this case. To practice counseling, one needs a higher degree (like PG and more like M.Phil/Ph.D.) or a long term training along with experience in the field. Internships at certain institutions will help in building credibility too, but professional training is mandatory. In some cases, they ask for licenses too if one wants to operate as a psychologist or psychotherapist.
As a Pharm D student, you can legally pursue and practice:
Diabetes Education – PHFI, IGNOU
Lifestyle & Nutrition Counseling – Apollo Medskills, Nutrify India
Mental Health First Aid – NIMHANS, FutureLearn
Stick to advisory roles (no diagnoses), and choose govt-recognized platforms like NIMHANS, PHFI, and IGNOU for credibility.
In India Clinical counselling and psychotherapy are legally for professionals with psychology or psychiatry backgrounds . Pharmacists must avoid diagnosis or treating mental health condition unless they pursue additional degrees .
Thank you so much, I will surely go through it.
Yeah, surely will consider this! Thank you!
Yeah, I have taken few of them on Udemy and thus I had developed my intrest in diabetes, diet and nutrition, etc; as a counselor. Thank you! Will surely do consider your highlighted points.
Yeah, I do have interset in medicine counselling, PV but along to that I am looking for side by side options where freelancing can be option. Thank you!

Yes, actually it will! Go through Harishtha_m’s comment you will get an idea.
Absolutely! I’ve been exploring ways to expand my skill set especially in chronic lifestyle counseling like diabetes, nutrition, and mental health.
Pharmacists in India can legally pursue short-term certified courses (non-clinical) in areas like:
- Diabetic nutrition & lifestyle counseling
- Basic mental health awareness
- Diet/wellness coaching
Recommended Platforms:
- NIMHANS
- IGNOU
- Medvarsity
- Coursera/Udemy
These courses may help us educate patients better, especially in chronic care. Would love to hear if anyone’s done one and how it helped in real practice!
Thank you! Do we get registration number after completing courses from platforms mentioned above, for that do you have any idea ? As I know Coursera and Udemy courses are for gaining knowledge but we can’t generate registration number through that certificates for practicing here.
