A diet rich in potassium has various health benefits, making it important for us to understand the role that potassium plays in our body.
The Role of Potassium:
Majority of the potassium in the body is found inside the cells- mainly in the muscles, in the red blood cells, the liver and bones.
Potassium is an electrolyte, ie. a substance that reacts in water. Electrolytes dissolve into either positive or negative ions when in water, and thus conduct electricity. Potassium ions carry positive charges.
This is how it helps in maintaining fluid balance inside our cells and outside the cells, and a variety of other functions such as conduction of nerve impulses and regulation of muscle contractions, including the muscles of the heart.
Potassium also has a role to play in lowering blood pressure. It does this by helping the body to excrete excess sodium (as high sodium levels cause an increase in blood pressure).
Foods rich in potassium:
Data from the NIH includes the following foods-
• Lentils
• Banana
• Nonfat yogurt
• Potatoes
• Apricots
Question: What steps can one take to be more mindful about how we consume electrolytes and other nutrients like vitamins and minerals?
