Warning Signs of Excessive Coconut Water Consumption

Have you ever wondered why it is not advised to drink coconut water daily??

Let me explain…

Coconut water is a natural source of electrolytes including potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and more.

It can help replenish lost fluids and minerals after sweating, especially during summer.

However excessive coconut water consumption can cause hyperkalemia—a dangerous rise in blood potassium levels that may lead to irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, or even cardiac arrest.

The risk of hyperkalemia from daily consumption increases if you have underlying, undiagnosed renal issues, diabetes or if you are taking medications that increase potassium levels.

:warning: Warning Signs

•Fatigue, muscle weakness

•Nausea, GI upset

•Irregular heartbeat, palpitations

•Dizziness, low blood pressure

•Frequent urination

Let me tell one of my experience during my internship

A young adult male came to the OPD with complaints of generalized weakness, nausea, and palpitations for the past two days. On detailed questioning, the patient revealed that he had been consuming coconut water daily for the last 10 days, believing it to be a healthy habit.Vitals were stable, but he appeared fatigued. Quick blood test revealed elevated potassium levels.ECG showed tall peaked T wave suggestive of hyperkalemia.Patient was immediately admitted for monitoring and started on treatment.

:white_check_mark: Takeaways

• Limit intake

•Avoid excess in high-risk groups

•Educate patients that natural doesn’t mean it is risk free.

We usually ignore the fact that something healthy in excess can also turn into something fatal.

Therefore, each and everything has limitations. We should follow that.

Strangely people believing in natural remedies for betterment of health and well-being often forget that anything in excess can be harmful . Any ingredient having benefit also has its own negative effect which it exerts if consumed beyond a certain limit. So there is a need to understand where to stop.
