What Can We Learn from Aunt Jennifer's Tigers Through Psychological Perspective?

“Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” is poem written by American poet Adrienne Rich in 1951, which is powerful feminist poem that critiques the oppressive nature of traditional marriages.

When I first read, “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers”, it was just another chapter that we had to study. In my mind, it was simply a poem about embroidery and imagination. But growing up, I realized it was more than that. The poem feels much deeper now, as it reflects how emotional burdens quietly shape a person’s life in real-life, something we often see in psychology and healthcare.

In this poem, Aunt Jennifer embroiders bright and fearless tigers, signifying the bold, confident, and “they do not fear the men beneath the tree” nature.

The tigers symbolize strength and freedom. Yet, Aunt Jennifer finds herself weighed down by the responsibilities and emotional pressure. This shows a clear contrast between the fearless tigers she creates and the burdens she experiences.

From a psychological perspective, this also explores how art can become a way of coping with trauma. When emotions feel difficult to express, or painful, the mind often finds ways to communicate. Art, music, writing, or creative expression can become a safe space, and a coping mechanism, which acts as a freedom of expression.

Aunt Jennifer may never openly speak about her struggles, but she creates the “fearless tigers” as the symbol of courage and strength, reflecting how much she longs for that strength and the resilience she still carries within herself.

In psychology, one important thing to remember: People have different ways to express themselves, either verbally or non-verbally.

Someone’s freedom of expression could be non-verbal, which includes art. Art can symbolize a person’s grief, and emotions that are beyond words.

In my opinion, Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers is a poem that goes beyond literature. It offers a deeper psychological perspective on how emotions can be processed and expressed through non-verbal means. Through Aunt Jennifer’s artwork, the poem explores the complexity of her emotions and gives us a glimpse into her inner world.

Perhaps that is what makes Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers so memorable.
