We studied the heart — but forgot our own.

In med school, we learn to read ECGs before we learn to read our emotions.

We know the textbook signs of a heart attack, but not how to deal with heartbreak after failing an exam, disappointing a mentor, or missing a friend’s wedding for a clinical rotation.

We’re trained to monitor vitals but forget to check our own:

Sleep? Low.

Appetite? Questionable.

Mental health? Unstable but functioning.

Medicine teaches us how to save lives. But sometimes, we forget we have one too.

When was the last time you checked in on yourself like you do your patients?

This post is gentle reminder for all the medical professionals that care for others start with caring for yourself . While we are learning to heal others , we also need to care for ourselves .Thanks for putting it into the words

True. A self check-in is extremely crucial and it should be done in a kind and slow process without any self-criticism and self-judgement. We need to closely observe what’s happening within our body and mind and how the emotions are flowing. Maybe we can notice the fatigue we feel, the sensations that come and go, a moment when breathing gets quick, a thought that doesn’t feel good inside the head, an emotion that makes us feel weak and vulnerable suddenly, any sudden urges and how they regulate us etc. Sometimes we need to give permission to ourselves to slow down, rest, speak up, feel, breathe, and live. We shouldn’t ignore the pain we feel and should know that we matter too just like any patient around us. In a world now, when it’s too comfortable to function on an autopilot mode, we shouldn’t forget that we need to stay in touch with ourselves first before doing the same with others.

We should be our priority

So true…We keep running behind duties, exams, expectations and forget we’re humans first. We say “I’m fine” even when we’re clearly breaking inside. Medicine teaches us everything… except how to take care of ourselves. Sometimes, even a small check-in with our own heart can make a big difference.

Yes self check up is a first priority . Regular check up should be done for us
