Starting undergraduate research feels like stepping into uncharted territory, exciting but overwhelming at the same time. Looking back, I wish I knew the below mentioned things before beginning my undergraduate research, not because they would have made me a great researcher but because they would have made the research journey lighter and more enjoyable.
1. Choose Interest over Scope: Pick research topics which you are truly interested in, not on whether it is easy, tough or it has more scope. Interests leads to consistent efforts which has a positive output.
2. Ask Freely, Speak Openly: Don’t hesitate to share your doubts with mentors or peers. Clarity comes from conversation and every question asked is a step toward confidence .
3. Trust Your Ability, Stay Positive: Don’t doubt yourself, maintain a confidence that you will be able to complete your research. Positive mindset boosts your wor k.
4. Criticism is Refinement, Not Rejection: Criticism is the part of the process Take it wisely to improve your research work not as an insu lt.
5. Value All Results, Even the Wrong One: Not every experiment in the research will yield positive results. Negative results are also a data and it teaches you m ore.
A research journey doesn’t always teach you how to produce great results or groundbreaking discoveries. It often quietly teaches patience, discipline and hard work. These qualities shape our personality and become lessons we can cherish throughout life.
What other things do you think we should be aware of before starting our research jo urne y?
