They handed me a wax block & expected a Tooth -My first carving experience

That was my first day as a dental student. I still remember clearly that my professor gave a rectangular white wax block and asked me to carve a maxillary central incisor. I repeatedly looked at wax and my carver with so much of confusion. Nobody actually warned me that dentistry would start with an art class.

Then I started reading about the morphology of the tooth and got a demo from the professor. Then I tried to apply the same on the wax block given. It was very exciting and interesting task to do, but definitely not easy to transform a 2D image knowledge into a three dimensional wax form.

In theory, learning about tooth morphology is straightforward - slopes, ridges, cingulum, etc. But when you try to recreate in a 3D form with your own hands, you will realise how much accuracy and precision dentistry actually demands. Being an artist myself, I thoroughly enjoyed these carving classes.

It teaches patience, hand control, spatial thinking and attention to detail.

Anatomy lab! Formalin vapours. Teary eyes, grossed out, felt dizzy throughout my first lab experience.

My first class was DADH class. I came 1 month late and I didn’t knew what to do. Everyone was making lateral incisor and I didn’t even knew how to make maxillary central incisor.

My first Anatomy and Physiology class was a mix of curiosity and drowsiness. Learning about the structure and functions of the human body was fascinating, but the detailed concepts and long explanations made a few parts feel a bit sleepy. Overall, it was an interesting introduction to the subject, and I’m looking forward to exploring it further.

This brings back so many memories! That first DADH carving class is a true rite of passage. I completely relate to looking at the wax block and the carver with pure confusion. You srat trying to carve a beautiful central incisor, make one wrong stroke with the carver, and suddenly your central incisor has accidentally become a small lateral incisor. There was nothing quite like the stress of polishing your wax tooth to a perfect shine on your lab apron, only to accidentally drop it on the floor right before submission. It really forces you to learn patience and strict control from day one.

1st day of degree college full of excitement and nervousness. The practical classes started with wax block and was told to carve a dumbell shape from it. Totally confused what is the relation of craving with densitry. But overtime and demonstration we got to know the importance of craving was block in dentistry.

My first day of college was a mix of excitement, nervousness, and curiosity. Everything felt new—from the classrooms to meeting new people. Looking back, it was the beginning of a journey that taught me much more than academics, including confidence, adaptability, and lifelong friendships.

My First day of physiology class and their practical. Mine carving related experience was also funny, totally confusing. our fist task is make any thing you feel. I made a Dumbbell.

First day college experience anatomy lab with fumes of formaline, had all teary eyes felt like fainting and I still remember the smell remained in my nose for next 1 hour.
