The Untold Struggle of Freshers Living Away From Home

Everyone talks about getting the “first corporate job” like it’s a dream come true.
But very few talk about what happens after that offer letter arrives.

Moving to a new city with a fresher’s salary sounds exciting until reality starts hitting all at once — expensive rent, daily travel, food expenses, loneliness, managing responsibilities, and trying to survive in cities where even basic living costs feel overwhelming.

Most freshers are not earning to live comfortably.
They are earning just enough to survive while gaining experience.

Behind every “I got placed” post, there are countless silent struggles:
• Adjusting to a completely new environment
• Learning professional skills while constantly feeling underqualified
• Managing stress, deadlines, and expectations
• Missing family while pretending to be independent
• Sacrificing comfort today for a better future tomorrow

The hardest part is that many freshers feel guilty for struggling because society expects them to simply be “grateful for the opportunity.”

But growth is not always glamorous.
Sometimes growth looks like budgeting every rupee, eating alone after work, doubting yourself silently, and still showing up the next morning ready to learn.

To every fresher trying to build a career away from home — your struggle is valid, and your effort matters more than people realize.

What do you think is the biggest challenge freshers face while starting their careers in a new city?

Yes, when freshers start in a new city, it’s a combo of fear with slight excitement of what is to come. What happens totally depends on how one responds to situations.

I feel the biggest challenge is not having a cushion called family or friends to fall back on. This is something one can experience when moving to a new city; the comfort and the protected cocoon are missing. For example, after a long day at work, they can’t say, “Oh! My mom should have cooked something when I get home.” Or after a stressful day at work, they can no longer say, “I have my best friend to hang out with now.” There are new people everywhere, and you’re managing stress, hunger, and sickness all by yourself.

yes I totally agree with you, in cities everyone wants to compete and find a better life for themselves and it’s really difficult to trust who is a friend or who is trying to be our friend.

Starting a new phase of life called “Adulting”, the first step is getting out of our comfort zone and learn things that we didn’t in our parents house.

New city, new people, lack of family support are the main challenges.
