Remember the childhood rule: ‘Don’t play in the mud, you’ll get sick!’
Yet many of us grew up playing in parks, getting our hands dirty, sharing toys with friends, and somehow developing strong immune systems along the way.
This raises an interesting scientific question:
Can growing up in an environment that is too clean affect our immune system?
This idea is known as the Hygiene Hypothesis.
Scientists first noticed that children who grew up with siblings, pets, or on farms seemed to have lower rates of allergies and asthma compared to children raised in highly sanitised environments.
The theory suggests that during early childhood, our immune system needs exposure to a variety of harmless microbes from the environment to learn the difference between what is dangerous and what is not.
Without enough exposure, the immune system may become “overprotective,” reacting to harmless substances such as pollen, dust, or certain foods, leading to allergies or other immune-related conditions.
What Does Research Say?
Research over the past few decades has found that children raised on farms or in environments with greater microbial exposure often have lower rates of allergies and asthma. Scientists now believe that exposure to a diverse range of microbes may help train and regulate the immune system during early life.
However, researchers now prefer the term “Old Friends Hypothesis”, which emphasizes exposure to beneficial microbes rather than simply being “less clean.”
Does This Mean Hygiene Is Bad?
Absolutely not.
Good hygiene practices remain essential for preventing infections and saving lives.
- Washing hands before eating and after using the restroom.
- Vaccinations.
- Safe drinking water.
- Proper food hygiene.
These are among the greatest public health achievements in history.
The message isn’t to stop being clean.
The message is that there is a difference between necessary hygiene and living in a completely sterile environment.
Supporting a Healthy Immune System:
- Spending time outdoors.
- Interacting with nature.
- Eating a diverse and balanced diet.
- Exposure to pets and natural environments when appropriate.
- Regular physical activity.
- Getting enough sleep.
