The day I realised college isn’t only teaching me subjects

I used to think college was just about studying, exams, and marks.

But over time, I noticed I was learning things that weren’t written in any syllabus.

I learnt things like:

• Showing up even when I don’t feel mentally 100%

• Managing multiple deadlines at once

• Staying calm when things don’t go as planned

• Continuing even when I’m not fully confident

It isn’t obvious to us as we are caught up in our own world and don’t observe them.

But these are the skills we end up using every single day.

Healthcare courses don’t just teach theory.

They slowly teach you how to handle pressure and still move forward.

:speech_balloon: What’s something your course taught you that wasn’t in the syllabus?

As you rightly said college definitely pushes us forward to the maximum of our capabilities. I learned the importance of having effective communication which included how to diplomatically deal certain situations even when I they do not align to my ideologies.

This article really resonates — medical college teaches much more than textbooks. The clinical years, patient interactions, teamwork, and even the challenges we face shape our professionalism, empathy, and resilience in ways that exams alone never could. It’s these lived experiences that truly prepare us for the realities of healthcare.

My course taught me resilience on how to function under pressure, communicate despite uncertainty, and keep learning from mistakes. Those invisible lessons shape professionals far more than marks ever do.

The lessons are endless… but my true learning was realizing how easy it is to get distracted, and how important it is to finish what we start, even if it takes longer. The chance of winning only exists when we try; giving up guarantees the odds are lost.
