The Avocado Hand

Avocado has emerged as a trending fruit with most of the people seeking a healthy diet and looking for weight loss. Who would have thought that eating something so healthy could pose serious healthcare concern. Yes, it is true and it goes by the name ā€˜Avocado Hand’. So let me tell you what it means.

If you have tried to prepare an avocado, you will agree with me that peeling this fruit or deseeding it is a task. And it is very common for an individual to injure himself/ herself while deseeding an avocado. This self inflicted, accidental injury often damages the nerves and tendons and is called ā€˜Avocado hand’.

And apparently it a more common than we can imagine. This injury is often so serious and requires surgical intervention to restore the digit/s. Commonly affects the less dominant hand of the person.

So next time you want to eat an avocado, follow simple safety rules,

  • Avoid using knife for deseeding the avocado, use a spoon instead.

  • Avoid working on it while its placed on your palm, use a chopping board.

OMG! I just remembered about this phenomenon…

Last year, a hand surgeon warned US citizens not to cut avocados for 48 hours, as all of the country’s hand surgeons were going to assemble in California for a conference. So, she warned that they might not get the adequate help that they deserve.

Yes, I’ve actually experienced this while cutting an avocado. it was small cut but painful injury. At that moment I didn’t expect such small cutting mistake to cause an injury. but definitely it made realize that how important to be careful while cutting.

Creating awareness regarding this issue which is hardly taken seriously is necessary.
