Supplements: When They Help and When They Don’t

A supplement can help maintain health if and when there is actually a need for one. They are useful in deficiency states or in increased requirements, and this includes anemia, vitamin D deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, and folic acid in pregnancy.

Nevertheless, the use of supplements without necessity has no health advantage and can instead be detrimental. Vitamins, for instance, may collect in the body. What is natural is not always safe. Moreover, there is less oversight for these items.

For a healthy person, a balanced diet is necessary and provides all the requirements of the body. Supplements are needed as a backup, not as a substitute for a healthy diet or medical care.

Are supplements supporting your health or just adding to your routine?

Supplements support your body only when there is a genuine need for vitamins and minerals. While supplementation are often advertised as a quick fix for deficiencies, overconsumption of supplements can lead to accumulation and toxicity in the body. To boost overall nutritional health, they should be used in a balanced, healthy regimen.

Many of the people just think taking supplements alone can correct the deficiency, but it only need for the support to our body

Many patients end up taking otc supplements thinking it gives them immunity. Even today in many PHCs patients demand for B12 injections for every visit saying it gives them enough strength until next visit. Spreading awareness of toxicity and side effects is key to reduce this misuse of supplements.

Well one needs to get their blood evaluated before starting supplements. Even if they are over- the-counter drugs, one needs to know if there really is a need of consuming those supplements and yes some micronutrients like vitamin A are not readily excreted and do accumulate in the adipose tissue and stellate cells of liver over time, hence have high risk of toxicity. Water soluble B-complex carries relatively low risk as compared to the fat soluble ones.

Well said. Supplements are beneficial when there is a proven deficiency or increased requirement, but unnecessary use offers no added benefit and may cause harm. A balanced diet should always be the foundation, with supplements used only when clinically indicated.

Many people include multivitamin supplements in their daily routine without knowing they should only take them if there is a necessity. They can get a test done for the deficiency and see if they need supplements or not.

Hello,

Very useful topic, as many people takes supplements without consulting a doctor. If they feel low or tired they often start to take multivitamin, which may not always work.

People should understand when supplements are nessesary ,how to take them, and for how long.

Supplements definitely works well in deficiency but they don’t help in healthy individuals.

Excessive accumulation of vitamins in body can be harmful to health. So,take supplements when you really have vitamin deficiencies.

Consult with your doctor if you have any health issues and do the blood test as per your doctor’s suggestion.

Well said. Supplements work best as supportive tools, not substitutes for nutrition

Absolutely agree

Very true. Without deficiency, these practices offer little benefit and may even cause harm. Educating patients about appropriate use, potential toxicity, and addressing the real cause of symptoms is essential.

Exactly

Spot on! Supplements are needed as a backup, not as Substitute. IMO, social media has turned supplements into trend rather than a medical tool. We should understand that these pills and tablets cant replace complex nutrients found in a balanced meal. We are simply risking organ strain uselessly for expensive urine i would say. :woman_shrugging:

placed the point so well, vital amines and nutriments are not to make people feel healthier and better about themselves and consuming them regularly without a predefined need dosent do any good to people; rather, it might affect negatively in some cases

Supplements help when needed; otherwise balanced diet remains the best foundation.

Supplements can help when there is proven deficiencies but unnecessary supplements can do nothing, just loss of money, or even may cause harm.
