STANDING AND SIDE EFFECTS.

Q. Why does prolonged standing need to be avoided?

  • Prolonged standing for more than 15-20 minutes on a continuous and everyday basis hampers your fluid return to the heart.
  • Which in turn causes blood pooling in the legs due to the effect of gravity.
  • Load increases on calf muscles, and they have to work more due to the effect of gravity to maintain the fluid balance.
  • If the prolonged standing is continuous for years, the blood pooling occurs, ultimately leading to a condition called varicose veins. Because the valves in veins fail to function properly.

Q. What can be done to avoid varicose veins?

  • Once you start having varicose veins, the condition cannot be reversed. The surgical option is not much in evidence to be practiced.
  • Although if you know that you have done prolonged standing for the day, immediately once you reach home, keep your legs upside down for 10-15 mins. Also, one must do ankle exercises and calf stretching for at least another 10 mins.
  • Only half an hour is enough to do all this collectively, and it will help you for a more prolonged time.

One must do this exercise at least 10-15 minutes per day to avoid blood pooling after prolonged standing.

Calf stretching exercise.

Conclusion: Avoid prolonged standing for more than 15-20 minutes in an hour. Have you noticed your calf is tight due to prolonged standing? And how do you manage your pain? What are your thoughts on prolonged standing and its side effects?

Yes. It works wonders.

The wall-assisted inverted pose, and its advanced progression known as Sarvangasana in yoga, is beneficial for alleviating pressure from the legs. Any inversion posture can reverse blood flow, enhancing circulation and complementing physiotherapy by addressing blockages.

This article highlights something we often overlook — even something as simple as standing can have physiological effects. Prolonged or sudden standing can cause blood pooling in the legs, reduce venous return, and lead to symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or fainting in some individuals, especially if blood pressure drops (orthostatic hypotension). Recognising these effects helps us understand why posture changes, movement, and hydration matter for maintaining circulatory balance and overall comfort.

Prolonged standing impairs circulation; elevation and exercises prevent varicose veins.

Yes, very true.

I can relate to the pooling of blood in the legs part. My vision blurs and dims after prolonged standing, maybe because the venous return is less and blood doesn’t reach the brain vasculature. I wear compression stockings if I’ve to observe a long surgery.

Yes, Exactly. Surgeons face it the most due to long standing. And you are right standing causes less venous return and brain does not get enough blood supply and it causes blurring. :+1:t2::blush:
