A degenerative disease of the spine is known as spondylosis, which is becoming a growing problem among Indian women and is usually undiagnosed. It usually occurs in the cervical and lumbar areas because of wear and tear of intervertebral disc and joint as a result of age.
In Indian women, due to a lack of nutrients, in particular, calcium and vitamin D, osteoporosis is worsened by the onset of early menarche. Domestic duties, standing and sitting at poor postures, bending and straightening in repetitive motions also cause worsening of the spine, and extended periods of sitting or staring on screens only increase the rate of degeneration.
The hormonal alterations by menopause have a tremendous effect on bone density making them prone to degeneration of the spine and chronic pains. The symptoms consist of pain, stiffness, loss of mobility and in extreme cases, nerve compression that leads to numbness or tingling.
Medical consultation is usually delayed by social aspects since pain becomes accepted or it becomes overlooked. Absence of ergonomical awareness and preventive healthcare access can deteriorate the results. Imaging and clinical assessment through early diagnosis is important. Treatment involves posture correction, physiotherapy, pain management, lifestyle change and nutritional supplement. The efforts at countering spondylosis among Indian women should focus on awareness, early-on proactive measures and the transition to preventive spine health.
