Rice: Is skipping it really necessary?

Rice is a staple food in many parts of India. People have been consuming it for generations while leading a healthy and active lifestyle. However, recently, there has been growing concern among health-conscious individuals that rice should be replaced with other complex carbohydrate sources. This is because rice can spike the blood glucose levels, can be digested relatively fast, leaving a person feeling hungry sooner. When combined with a sedentary lifestyle and excessive calorie intake, this can contribute to weight gain.

But does this mean rice should be avoided completely? Not necessarily.

Although carbohydrates can be obtained from several other sources, eliminating rice entirely is not essential for most people. What matters more is the portion size and level of physical activity. Rice can be part of a balanced diet when consumed in appropriate amounts alongside protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Rice also serves as an excellent source of energy, making it particularly beneficial for individuals with higher energy requirements and who engage in regular physical activity. Rather than avoiding rice altogether, focusing on moderation and maintaining an overall balanced diet is a more practical and sustainable approach.

So, is there anyone here who’s into fitness and has completely avoided rice? Did you experience any drawbacks after cutting it out? What has your experience been?

This is really insightful. We do often hear people telling they completely avoid rice in their diets. But rather than avoiding rice, balancing the diet is the solution.

I stopped eating rice for a months and I have to say it was tough at first. I felt really tired and grumpy when I was working out.. Then I started eating sweet potatoes and quinoa. This really helped me to feel better and have energy when I am working out. The sweet potatoes and quinoa also helped to keep my glucose levels in check. I am really glad that I made the switch from rice to potatoes and quinoa because it has made a big difference, for me.
