Eyes are invaluable & irreplaceable - once any part of the eye like retina, optic nerve is damaged , the effects are permanent.

That is why protection of eyes is of paramount importance.

As medicos, we should protect our own eyes & make others aware about eye protection.

Eyes need protection & care from -

On road -

UV rays - use sunglasses

Travelling ( especially on a two wheeler) - dust , pollution, foreign bodies entering eyes

In Hospital-

-Chemical fumes

-Blood splash

-Foreign bodies

Sports ( especially ball games)

-Cricket - injury from high velocity impact of the ball

-Badminton- shuttlecock injury

-Hockey - stick injuries

Industry workers - eye protection during working hours

-Chemical injuries to cornea can be fatal

-Welders - UV burns to retina can lead to permanent loss of vision

-Carpenters- wood chips- corneal infections

Other professionals

-Farmers- vegetative matter in eye ( insect/ farming) - corneal infections

1Soldiers- ballistic debris
