In remote parts of developing countries, women often experience postpartum anemia. What are the possible ways to overcome this problem? In what ways the women can balance both needs: of her body and that of her baby?
Postpartum anemia can be reduced by providing iron-folic acid supplements, iron-rich foods like liver or legumes, and delayed cord clamping at birth. Breastfeeding mothers must eat iron-rich meals to recover while ensuring enough milk for their baby.
Commonest cause of post partum anemia is pph(post partum hemorrhage) hence 2rd stage management is very important to prevent pph + iron supplementation so be taken regularly (100 days during pregnancy + 100 days during postpartum) + iron rich food should be included in the diet
Etiological factors like
–Poor nutrition.
–blood loss
–Limited health care
Possible ways to overcome for this problem
–Promote iron rich food like leafy greens and animal source
–Enhance iron absorption like fruits and tomatoes
–Common food with iron and other micro nutrients like flour and salts
Govt of India has a scheme where they give combination of iron and folic acid for 180 days to the pregnant woman
- nutritional interventions like iron rich diet, iron and folic acid supplementations
- improving maternal healthcare access like antenatal and postnatal care and training of community health workers
- government and NGO support like introducing incentive schemes
To balance the need of mother and the baby
- adequate calorie intake by mother to support lactation
- sufficient rest and recovery
- encouraging family support
