Physician vs Surgeon

For common people, all doctors appear the same, that is, white coats, stethoscopes & a shared goal of healing the patients. However thats not the case, the roles of a physician & a surgeon are different & required different skill sets & mindsets.

Who Is a Physician?

A person qualified to practise medicine, especially one who specializes in diagnosis and medical treatment as distinct from surgery. Physicians are problem-solvers who ask why a disease occurs & how it can be controlled or cured without invasive procedures. Their work involves careful monitoring, adjusting treatments & coordinating multidisciplinary care.

Who Is a Surgeon?

A medical practitioner qualified to practise surgery. Surgeons are trained to make decisive decisions in high pressure situation. From removing tumors to repairing traumatic injuries, surgeons physically correct diseases/disorders that cannot be resolved with medicines alone.

Approach to Patient Care:

  • Physicians manage disease over time, focusing on prevention, control, and medical optimization.
  • Surgeons intervene at critical moments, offering definitive solutions when structural correction is needed.

Choosing between a Physician & Surgeon

It depends on:

  • Personality and temperament

  • Comfort with procedures and risk

  • Desire for long-term patient relationships

  • Lifestyle priorities

There is no superior role, only the role that aligns best with oneโ€™s interests!

If you were choosing today, would you see yourself more as a physician or a surgeon, & what factor would influence your decision the most?

Physicians and surgeons serve the same goal of healing, but with distinctly different mindsets one mastering long-term medical management, the other delivering decisive intervention when action is critical.

The choice is definitely a crucial one and should be guided by what one desires from their life. They should also factor in aspects outside of work other than money, perceived sense of prestige and include consideration for ones innate strengths and basic temperament to prevent burnout in the future and allow a greater sense of fulfillment.

Physician and surgeons - even though both are doctors, requires different mindsets. Always felt that front benchers go on to become physicians and backbenchers become surgeons.
