For common people, all doctors appear the same, that is, white coats, stethoscopes & a shared goal of healing the patients. However thats not the case, the roles of a physician & a surgeon are different & required different skill sets & mindsets.
Who Is a Physician?
A person qualified to practise medicine, especially one who specializes in diagnosis and medical treatment as distinct from surgery. Physicians are problem-solvers who ask why a disease occurs & how it can be controlled or cured without invasive procedures. Their work involves careful monitoring, adjusting treatments & coordinating multidisciplinary care.
Who Is a Surgeon?
A medical practitioner qualified to practise surgery. Surgeons are trained to make decisive decisions in high pressure situation. From removing tumors to repairing traumatic injuries, surgeons physically correct diseases/disorders that cannot be resolved with medicines alone.
Approach to Patient Care:
- Physicians manage disease over time, focusing on prevention, control, and medical optimization.
- Surgeons intervene at critical moments, offering definitive solutions when structural correction is needed.
Choosing between a Physician & Surgeon
It depends on:
-
Personality and temperament
-
Comfort with procedures and risk
-
Desire for long-term patient relationships
-
Lifestyle priorities
There is no superior role, only the role that aligns best with oneโs interests!
