PhD in India

Is a PhD in India Just a Backup Plan? Or Do Students Truly Want to Do Research?

For many, a PhD in India is seen as a “backup plan”—a way to stay in academia when jobs don’t work out. But is that the whole story?

Passion for Research

NIRF data shows nearly 40% of PhD students pursue research out of pure passion. They’re driven by curiosity and a desire to create new knowledge—not just degrees or titles.

The Backup Plan

The India Skills Report 2024 notes that about 30% see PhD as a safety net, using it to buy time in a tough job market or transition into academic roles.

The Career Reality

Funding is growing but still lags global standards. Many PhDs head abroad or into private jobs. Yet, fields like AI, biotech, and environmental science are opening new doors.

So, what’s the truth?

For some, PhD is a calling. For others, a fallback. The difference lies in purpose.

I feel like PhD in India has begun to go in the same direction as a bachelor’s degree aka just for namesake. Sometimes people are pressured into it for attaining relevancy in a certain area in academia. People with a proper PhD plan also falter in ways that aren’t under their control like funding, guidance etc.

It depends on the individual, some see a PhD in India as an escape from limited job options, while for others it’s a genuine mission driven by passion for research and knowledge.

It depends on the individual. Some may choose to pursue a Ph.D. because of their passion for learning and research, while others might opt for a postgraduate degree or a Ph.D. to avoid the challenges of job searching. However, I suggest that you choose based on your interests, as you will eventually have to work in that field. Therefore, prioritize your interests and passion when making your decision.
