PATCHING THE GOOD EYE –  AMBLYOPIA THERAPY

Amblyopia is also known as ‘’lazy eye’’. It is a visual development disorder where the brain and the eye axis are not conjoined properly. The brain favours one eye over the other causing reduced visual acuity in the weaker eye.

Early diagnosis is critical in restoring vision.

COMMON: CAUSES:

Strabismus – Eye misalignment

Anisometropia – Unequal refractive error in both eyes.

Deprivation – Physical obstruction of the cornea or crystalline lens. Ex: Opacity.

CLINICAL SIGNS:

Squinting

Covering of one eye

Abnormal head posture

Bumping into objects.

Poor depth perception.

TREATMENT OPTIONS:

Prescription of eyeglasses.

Patching therapy – Done by optical (cotton pads or obstructive filters)/ pharmacological (atropine drops). Good eye is obstructed typically 1-2 hr/day to make use of amblyopic eye

Advanced therapy – Virtual in office/home session, where the training are provided by optometrist.

Did you heard this condition in paediatric groups? What kind of treatment they received during your practice?

Thanks for sharing. Early detection really is the key, as treatment is much more effective during the critical period of visual development. It’s encouraging to see newer approaches like binocular and virtual vision therapy complementing traditional patching.
