Can Eye Drops Replace Reading Glasses?

As we age, many people develop presbyopia, a common condition that makes it difficult to see nearby objects clearly. Traditionally, reading glasses have been the most common solution, but new prescription eye drops are offering another option.

Recently approved eye drops such as Vuity, Qlosi, and VIZZ work by creating a “pinhole effect” in the eye. These drops temporarily shrink the pupil, helping improve near vision without significantly affecting distance vision.

Some key points:

  • Effects may begin within 15–30 minutes

  • Improved near vision may last for several hours

  • May reduce dependence on reading glasses for some individuals

  • Available only with a prescription and proper eye examination

However, these drops are not a permanent cure for presbyopia and may cause mild side effects such as headache, eye redness, or temporary dim vision in some users.
