Paracetamol’s history beautifully shows how life-changing discoveries can happen through serendipity. I think this happened during late 1800s when researchers were testing chemicals to kill intestinal worms and they found that, Paracetamol did not harm the parasites. Instead, it reduced fever, a side effect that became its main purpose. I remember another one like this. It is “Minoxidil”, that was first made to treat high BP issues, but doctors noticed that the patients began growing more hair while using it. This side-effect led to its introduction as one of the most popular treatments for hair loss. As they say, sometimes detours take us to the correct destinations.

Wow, that’s surprising! A medicine made for deworming ends up being one of the most common pain and fever reducers today.

Informative and interesting. I never knew about this and the fact that paracetamol is now widely used as an analgesic instead of anthelmintic truly speaks to its unexpected success.

Paracetamol was discovered by chance while testing medicine for worms. Instead of killing worms, it helped reduce fever and pain. Now, it’s one of the most common medicines people use for headaches and fevers.

it works quietly, targeting the brain’s pain and temperature control centers without affecting inflammation like other painkillers. It’s gentle on the stomach compared to NSAIDs, making it safer for many people. But its hidden danger is overdose, which can severely damage the liver. So, while it’s a trusted everyday medicine, its real secret is that it must be respected as much as it’s relied on.
