PARACETAMOL (PCM)

Everyone should know about PCM

-it is also called as acetaminophen

Most used brands of pcm is : dolo 650 ,calpol

The PCM was discovered in 1877 by harmon Northrop morse, but recognised after long time.

Pcm is mainly used as anti pyretic and anti- analgesic

-Guidelines: Always adhere to recommended doses (for adults, typically 500–1,000 mg every 4–6 hours, max 4,000 mg/day). Overdose can cause serious and potentially fatal liver injury

-First human use: 1887 by Joseph von Mering, who administered it to patients and reported his findings.

I think paracetamol is one of the biggest and best discovery in field of pharmacy..

Q1. Mention some adverse effect of PCM?

Q2:- would you prefer pcm in every symptoms or after doctors consultation?

Q3:- there are lots of drugs show these type of action so why only PCM , why no other drug replaced the PCM?

1 :- Liver toxicity, allergic reaction, kidney damage, skin reaction.

2 :- Personally, I wouldn’t recommend PCM for every symptom despite its wide safety margin, self-medication isn’t always wise.

3 :- While many drugs have antipyretic and analgesic actions, PCM remains a first-line choice because of excellent safety profiles, sale for all aged groups, low allergic risks, availability and cost.

:pill: Absolutely, PCM (Paracetamol) is one of the most trusted drugs worldwide — but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

:magnifying_glass_tilted_right: Adverse Effects (especially in overdose):

Acute liver toxicity (most common, sometimes fatal if untreated)

Rare but serious skin reactions (Stevens–Johnson syndrome, TEN)

Kidney damage in chronic/high doses

Hypersensitivity reactions in a few individuals

:warning: Why we must be cautious:

Because it’s OTC, many people pop PCM for any symptom — headache, cold, even minor fatigue — but repeated high doses silently damage the liver.

In fact, PCM overdose is among the leading causes of drug-induced liver failure worldwide.

:glowing_star: Why PCM still hasn’t been replaced:

Safe even for children and pregnant women (when used correctly).

Low allergic risk compared to NSAIDs (like aspirin, ibuprofen).

Widely available, cheap, and effective for both fever and pain.

Balanced efficacy without strong gastric side effects.

:light_bulb: Always check if a patient is already taking combination meds (like cold/flu syrups, painkillers) — many contain hidden PCM. Double-dosing unknowingly is a common risk.

 Question:

Since PCM is both life-saving and potentially harmful if misused — do you think we should restrict its sale like antibiotics, or keep it OTC for accessibility?

  1. Using PCM for long term use may lead to liver damage.
  2. I will prefer paracetamol after doctor consultation only.
  3. Many drugs are available but many people still choose paracetamol due to low adverse effects and low cost.

It is widely used because it is a OTC medicine.
