As we all know the most commonly used Over The Counter drug in india is paracetamol, but look what I’ve found about this drug.
According to a recent Study it is found that in older adults aged above 65 who were taking paracetamol too often have more chances to get serious side effects in comparison to the one’s wo aren’t taking it too often.
Side effects like,
Peptic Ulcer Bleeding (24% more risk).
Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding (36% more risk).
Heart Failure (9% more risk).
Hypertension (7% more risk).
Chronic kidney diseases (19% more risk).
I agree. Pepole use PCM too often .
OTC medicine used in every household.
They don’t know about its side effects.
By longer use it cause hepatotoxicity.
This is eye-opening!
Paracetamol is often seen as “safe,” but frequent use especially in the elderly can quietly raise the risk of serious health issues.
As pharmacy students, we need to educate people that OTC doesn’t mean risk-free. Even routine meds need responsible use.
Every Indian house has atleast 2 sheets of paracetamol as stock they think that paracetamol can cure anything. Pharmacists should educate people about it’s overdose and harmful effects while dispensing.
This study involves a lot of question regarding the usage of OTC drugs. It’s a reminder that even common medicines should be used wisely, especially in the elderly.
Absolutely right, never self-medicate frequently without proper advice even with mild drugs like paracetamol. It’s always best to consult a doctor or pharmacist before regular use.
Thanks for highlighting. Also, excessive or long-term use of paracetamol can cause hepatotoxicity (liver damage), which can be severe and even life-threatening in some cases. So, it’s important to use paracetamol only when necessary and under proper guidance.
This information will helpful to all people who are blindly addicted to cure for all symptoms like nausea, pain relief headache, fever,…etc for this symptoms relief we are taking too much dosage of paracetamol.
Regular intake of paracetamol may increase the chances of liver and kidney damage, heart disease and if the person have high blood pressure then it may cause stroke.
Taking too many painkillers can harm your liver, kidneys, and stomach. Use them wisely and follow the recommended dose prescribed by the doctor. Dont take wisely.
Yes, we usually consider paracetamol as a very safe option and take it without much thought. But this info really shows how even common medicines can have serious effects if not used carefully—especially for older people. It’s a reminder that we should always take medicines only when really needed and under proper guidance.
