Oil pulling : another trend or really useful?

Oil pulling is a traditional practice , rooted in ayurveda , where edible oil is squished in the mouth to help clear the debris and reduce oral bacteria .

Basic concept

The basic idea behind this practice is that oil binds with the debris and microorganism and helps in removing them during squishing.

The commonly used oils are sesame oil , coconut oil etc .

Advantages

Despite the trends on social media , the scientic facts about oil pulling remain limited.

  • Reduction in oral microorganisms and debris is seen

  • Can help in reducing halitosis

  • Can provide an overal fresh feel

But still the effects are far less than the other oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing .

Disadvantages

  • The jaws can become sore after performing squishing for 20 minutes.

  • Time consuming

  • Relying only on oil pulling can lead to various oral diseases in future

Conclusion

Oil pulling should be used as an add on oral practice with brushing and flossing but not a substitute.

So, is oil pulling worth adding in your daily routine?

Oil pulling is a useful traditional practice for maintaining oral cleanliness and freshness. It can help reduce bacteria and bad breath, but itโ€™s not strong enough to replace brushing and flossing. Best used as an add-on, not the main method.
