My thoughts after doing 3 years of Pharmacy degree

When I joined pharmacy, I honestly thought that my whole degree would be reading drug names, AE, and mechanisms. But now 3 years in… I can say it’s not that simple.
From my classroom, the changes are visible.
Healthcare system is changing so fast…
Things like telemedicine and AI are becoming normal, everything we study keeps evolving with it.
At the same time patients are also not the same anymore, they are well aware of AI and just keep google everything and sometimes even challenging the prescription based google answers.

Somewhere in between all of this, I started realizing that the role we are preparing for is also evolving- which feels exciting, but at the same time bit scary too.

One experience that really stayed with me was during a medical camp where I involved in dispensing medicines. A patients said to me that he wasn’t much of aware of it, so I took some time and explained him carefully. Later they came back to me to say thank you. it was a small moment, but it felt different.

That’s when it hit me-- we are not just giving medicines; we are part of their recovery.
And another thing I’ve also started understanding how important Communication is.
Many times, it’s not about the medicines that fails- it’s because of not understanding properly.
It also made me realize something about my self- if I can’t explain something in simple words to others, I probably don’t understand it well enough myself.

To juniors, I would just say-Don’t just study to pass the exams, try to understand core behind it why drug is used, why a patient might stop after somedays, why it is preferred over the other.
Understanding the reason behind is more matter than the grades. Always think beyond the books.
For me, pharmacy is not just about the medicines, is also more about understanding patient…

–When did you realize this field is more than just studying?

Any sub specialty in healthcare demands a lot more than academic knowledge. Whether it is patient communication, skills to thrive in clinical practice or being versed with the latest advancements, a healthcare professional should be aware of and always be ready to imbibe the best.

Yes it’s true the degree and academics is not enough to get understand the medical field. With constant new innovations, AI though it’s getting easy but at the same time also much challenging . Practical exposures are very much important to sustain and growth.
