Many students get confused in between Murphy’s sign and Murphy’s traid while studying internal medicine. Medicine is vast subject so there are many terms that sounds similar with each other with completely different meanings and concept. In this post I’m trying to distinguish and explain these two completely different topics.
What is Murphy’s sign
This medical sign present in person with Acute Cholecystitis . This sign appears while patient’s physical examination by doctor. Patient feels sharp pain and almost hold breath while doctor pressing his upper right part of abdomen.
Why such pain occurs? Because when doctor press upper right abdomen while patient taking deep breath, breathing moves liver slight upwards the inflamed gallbladder gets directly against the doctor’s finger and hence sharp pain occurs and patient suddenly hold breath in response to pain.
What is Murphy’s traid
The word traid itself pointing that it consist three component. In case of classic Acute Appendicitis there are 3 clinical features present
- Abdominal Pain from umbilicus and move towards right lower part of abdomen.
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Fever
these 3 features helps in provisional diagnosis and hence helps to start the treat as soon as possible.
Even having similar names these two concepts are totally different from each other and hence while studying medicine one should go deep to understand the concepts first.
Comment your thought about this and have you ever got confused by this terms or any other medical terms.
