When we hear about periods, the issues that usually comes to our mind are bloating, cramps and fatigue. Today people are far more aware of the depth and impact of these physical challenges. Alongside them, mood swings are also considered as a genuine concern.
Yet, despite this awareness, women are still too often labeled as ‘overthinking’, ‘seeking attention’, or simply ‘being moody’. This behavior of prejudging hides the biological reality behind fluctuations in emotions.
Mood swings are commonly observed before, during and after periods.
Pre-Menstrual phase (Before Periods): Female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone levels lowers down which imbalances serotonin (chemical messenger associated with feeling good) levels in the brain leading to irritability.
Menstrual Phase (During Periods):Low estrogen and progesterone levels along with cramps and tiredness makes the mood heavy.
Post-Menstrual Phase (After Periods):The recovery of the body due to menstrual stress and the rising up of both estrogen and progesterone hormones to the normal levels can lead to emotional distress.
Thus, the above explanation is a scientific proof that mood swings are entirely biological. Misconceptions regrading this should be avoided and it’s a collective responsibility to at least understand women during this time if cannot actively help.
