Know connection between stress and tinnitus

Tinnitus is commonly manifest as a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in the ears without any external source. This is most commonly associated with a hearing problem.

But have you ever experienced this tinnitus in stressful conditions?

Stress can either be from psychological pressure or from bodily stress (i.e. trauma or infection). Research has shown that its relation with stress and anxiety situations. It plays a major role in the severity and onset of tinnitus.

A person with tinnitus caused by stress may not yet have constant ear ringing. Rather, they only hear the ringing in their ears when they experience stress. In fact, about 65% of individuals with tinnitus show signs of stress, and the severity of stress tends to increase as tinnitus becomes more bothersome.

Biologically, stress affects the body’s nervous system and may alter how the brain processes sound signals. Emotional distress, tension, and poor coping mechanisms can increase awareness of internal noises. Over time, this can turn tinnitus into a persistent and distressing condition, significantly affecting quality of life.

Management of such a condition mainly works by controlling stress and anxiety - techniques such as relaxation, meditation, coping mechanisms, counselling, and lifestyle modification become helpful.
