No antiviral medication has been shown to treat rabies once symptoms begin.

The illness quickly progresses to coma and death, typically within days to weeks.

Once rabies symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal.
Prompt post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after a bite can prevent symptoms, but treatment options are limited once symptoms start.
Rare survival cases have been reported with intensive care, but outcomes are generally poor.
