: Is MBBS the Only Medical Degree That Gets Real Respect in India?

Even though BDS, BPT, and Pharmacy require years of study, society still calls only MBBS students “real doctors.” Have you ever felt this bias in college, clinics, or even your own family?

I have felt this biasness in the hospital I am interning. The MBBS interns/residents are the only ones that get real respect, even though sometimes, we know more than them.

Yes, the bias is definitely real and it mostly stems from a societal view that only considers “doctors” as physicians. To create an equal platform for everyone, we need more public awareness related to the role of a person in each profession, interprofessional education during healthcare trainings, and even institutional recognition/regard that values all the healthcare contributors in an equal manner. A changed perception can only start through both education and respectful collaboration across all the fields.

People are westernising not modernising
So they feel mbbs is the great.
Nothing much everything has its glow time and it will end though.

Sadly true. Especially if you are young. Others earn respect over the period of time because of their work and seniority.

Freshly graduated MBBS doctors receive more respect in society compared to other doctors.

Yes, that’s true. In India, MBBS often gets the spotlight and most of the respect, maybe because people are less aware of other roles in healthcare. Many still believe that choosing BiPC means you have to become a doctor, but there are so many other fields that contribute equally to saving lives and supporting patients. Sadly, even educated people sometimes overlook this and treat non-MBBS professionals as “less important,” which really needs to change. Every role matters in healthcare.

True I’ve seen in my family itself how MBBS is regarded as “true doctor” and the rest considered lower to MBBS. Society should Stop this bias as everyone in this healthcare field are working equally hard. No matter what course you’re choosing in healthcare you’re saving lives directly or indirectly.

Yes I do have felt the biases every where I go. Whether it’s family or society everyone compares me with MBBS. Each and everyone considers MBBS as a high level degree with respect, where only few considers Ayurveda, homeopathy, Pharma are also good fields.

Each branch of medical sciences has its own value and place. We might think that MBBS grads are given more traction, but we really look at the researchers with more awe and inspiration. And bench research is often a very rigorous work, typically such scientists have a lot more scholarly knowledge and acumen. So, it depends how we look at the things.

Even though the ‘Dr’ tag is given to so many graduates and also those after phd, the society only considers MBBS graduates as real doctors. Even though its nothing personal, it hurts a little bit when your own parents also consider you sub-standard doctors..Dont take it personal and move on with your life.

Sadly, yes. People often tease us saying, ‘You’re just a tooth doc.’ And honestly, it feels even more offensive when it’s said in my native language. I’ve heard it from family, relatives… But when that unbearable tooth pain hits, only we can fix it!

The bias is real. People in India still associate respect with only MBBS doctors. While no offence to MBBS (because obviously they work hard daily to provide their best service) there are other roles too in healthcare which deserve their due appreciation. BDS,BPT and even Nursing staff are still very underappreciated for their hardwork.

Yes, this biasness in colloge, clinics and in our society is faced by all healthcare professionals other than MBBS. The public need to understand that every sector and field of healthcare professionals need respect in their areas. This is only possible when each and every healthcare individual understands the role and importance of each other, and collaborate for better results.

Yes , it is the harsh reality we are facing in India, only MBBS among medical feild is getting tje value and respect, no other people.
It is so sad , like those MBBS students , we pharmacy, nursing,BDS, physiotherapy and so on also invest their time , money and everything, but they treated like nothing, no respect at all.

It has to be changed.
Changes should be brought and all should be respected.
