Gum disease is the oral health condition that affects many and still goes unnoticed. And this ignorance leads to its progression into advanced stages, which can lead to an irreversible loss of teeth called periodontitis.
What is Gum Disease?
It is characterized by inflammation of gums [the tissues surrounding the teeth] that manifests as swollen and bleeding gums as the first sign.
Causes of Gum Disease
The primary cause of gum disease: poor oral hygiene
Other causes are:
- Systemic conditions like diabetes,
- Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause
- Lifestyle habits like smoking and tobacco chewing.
Stages of gum disease
- Gingivitis—Reddish, swollen gums can be seen.
- Bleeding of Gums–gums bleed on chewing or brushing your teeth.
- Periodontitis—Gum recedes away from teeth, making teeth loosen.
- Advanced Periodontitis—loss of bone surrounding teeth leading to loose teeth in sockets.
Management of Gum Disease
Gum disease has 4 stages, and it can be cured and reversed in the early stages easily at home.
As the primary cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene, following good oral hygiene practices at home reverses the inflammation caused.
The advanced stages, where gum disease reaches bone, need professional treatment and cleaning based on overall oral condition.
