Is charcoal toothpaste safe for our teeth?

Charcoal toothpastes, marketed as tooth whiteners, contain activated charcoal, an abrasive substance that can help remove surface stains. While safe in small doses, charcoal toothpaste shouldn’t be used daily, since it may damage tooth enamel.

Using it occasionally is fine.

As a periodontist, I will not recommend highly abrasive tooth pastes for patients because they do more harm than benefit.

This is such a relevant question—charcoal toothpaste has definitely become a trend, but there’s more to it than just a bright smile.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: For anyone looking to dig deeper, I recommend this article from MedBound Times:

It explores:

  • Whether charcoal actually whitens teeth
  • The abrasive effects on enamel over time
  • What dentists are saying about long-term safety

While it might offer temporary whitening, there are concerns about enamel erosion, gum irritation, and lack of fluoride in many of these products. So yes, it’s “natural,” but not necessarily safe for everyday use.

Definitely worth reading before making it a regular part of your routine!
